Learning Objectives

Knowledge

Participants will be able to:

  • develop an understanding of the place of a woman's own charting of her symptoms of her fertility and infertility throughout all stages of her reproductive life.

  • increase their understanding of the scientific basis of the relationship between a woman's own observations of symptoms of ovulation, fertility and infertility and the measurement of ovarian hormones.

  • have a greater understanding of the role of the cervix in fertility and its recognizable response to rising oestrogen and progesterone.

  •  understand the scientific reason for the rules of the Billings Ovulation Method when used to either achieve or avoid a pregnancy.

  • recognise the importance of accurate information being given to women who wish to follow a natural method of fertility regulation.

Skills

Participants will be able to:

  • read and understand a chart presented by a woman using the Billings Ovulation Method.

  • identify hormonal and cervical changes from a woman's own descriptions and charting.

  •  identify possible pathology observed by a woman charting signs differing from her normal symptoms of fertilitylinfertility.

Attitudes

Participants should feel more:

  • comfortable in discussing the natural signs of fertility and infertility with their patients.

  • confident in relying on the woman's own observations as a way of monitoring her reproductive health.

  • assured in making referral to an accredited Billings Ovulation Method teaching service.

Behaviour

Participants should:

  • give confidence to women who wish to chart their symptoms of fertility and infertility using the Billings Ovulation Method.

  • encourage all women to know their own normal symptoms of fertility and infertility and to identify changes which would need medical investigation.

  • encourage couples to follow the rules of the Billings Ovulation Method to achieve or avoid pregnancy using this Method.

  • refer to an accredited Billings Ovulation Method teaching service if they chose not to teach patients themselves.
